Overview We are looking for a WordPress Developer with strong expertise in creating, customizing, and maintaining WordPress themes and plugins. The ideal candidate will have solid experience in both front-end and back-end development, with a strong command of PHP and WordPress APIs. As a WordPress Engineer at DigitalOcean, you will join a dynamic team dedicated to revolutionizing cloud computing and AI. This role reports to the Technical Manager and works closely with product, design, and QA teams. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in WordPress core, custom plugin / theme development, and performance optimization, along with strong leadership and problem-solving skills. Over time, this person is expected to grow into a key technical leader, driving architecture decisions, improving development processes, and shaping the future direction of the platform.
What You’ll Do
Lead the development of custom WordPress themes, plugins, and REST API integrations to deliver high-quality, scalable solutions.
Optimize website performance, security, and Core Web Vitals to ensure fast and reliable user experiences.
Architect and implement scalable site structures, ensuring clean, maintainable, and reusable code.
Manage version control (Git), deployment workflows for smooth releases.
Research and implement new WordPress features, tools, and emerging technologies to improve development processes.
Troubleshoot and resolve complex bugs, performance bottlenecks, and compatibility issues across multiple environments.

What You’ll Add to DigitalOcean Education :
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
Experience :
Minimum 5+ years of professional WordPress development experience, including custom plugin / theme development, REST API integration, and performance optimization.
Technical Skills
Strong expertise in PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3, and jQuery.
Proficiency in modern build tools (Webpack, Gulp, npm) and version control (Git).
Solid understanding of WordPress architecture, hooks, filters, and best practices for scalability and security.
Familiarity with WooCommerce, Gutenberg / Block Editor, and third-party API integrations.
Experience with server environments (NGINX / Apache), caching, and CDN setup.
Leadership Skills Proven ability to lead and mentor developers, conduct code reviews, and manage small teams.
Certifications (Preferred) WordPress Certified Developer, PHP Certification, or relevant web development certifications.
Other Requirements Excellent problem-solving skills, strong communication abilities, and experience collaborating with cross-functional teams.
